obama, you could argue. it makes sense that he's serving as the president's proxy. this is something the president is engaged with. this is something the white house is very engaged with. he said yesterday he's optimistic that a deal can be struck. i think that's not surprising. that's what you'd expect to come from president obama. but we're also -- we sort of said tonight is the deadline and that's true because a lot of the tax cuts expire at midnight. the sense we're getting from a lot of sources and from members of congress is that perhaps tonight isn't a hard and fast deadline. mitch mcconnell and the vice president are negotiating in earnest to find a deal. but it's sort of difficult to see how exactly that may come to be by midnight and have votes in the senate and house. the thought is that going over the cliff gives cover for some democrats and certainly some republicans. there will be a lot more pressure after the cliff comes to be to put a solution in place. even after midnight were to come and go, we would see them wo working towards an agreement, e we would expect. >> po

of the electorate changed. as the obama campaign predicted more than a year ago, the white portion of the electorate dropped from 74% in 2008 to 72% in 2012. the president carried nearly 8 in 10 non-white voters including an astounding 71% of latinos and 73% of asian voters and a of course, a whopping 93% of black voters. it remains a real question whether the democratic nominee in 2016 will be able to hold the obama coalition together, which also includes young voters, but the republican party is right to be re-examining its relationship with minorities. finally, lesson four, don't ignore the data. poll meater and more are right than wrong. they showed the president ahead. the romney campaign sincerely believed until election day they would win. romney pollsters assumed their electorate would be whiter and older than it turned out to be. they didn't have enough voters. more than any cycle in recent history, many republicans bought into an alternative polling universe where the vast majority of pollers were a conspiracy vaeted by some mastermind determined to suppress voting. in 2016, they will hope

obama met with congressional leaders for several hours at the white house today to try to hammer out a deal before taxes go up on more than 160 million americans. after the meeting, the president presented a new plan to avoid the cliff and said he was modestly optimistic. >> we had a constructive meeting today. senators reid and mcconnell are discussing a potential agreement where we can get a bipartisan bill out of the senate over into the house and done in a timely fashion so that we met the december 31st deadline. given how things have been working in this town we have to actually wait and see until it actually happens. the one thing that the american people should not have to wait and see is some sort of action. so if we don't see an agreement between the two leaders in the senate, i expect a bill to go on the floor. and i have asked senator reid to do. this put a bill on the floor that makes sure that taxes on middle class families don't go up, that unemployment insurance is still available for 2 million people, and that lays the groundwork then for additional deficit reduction
